We live in the materialistic world which means that the society makes a big effort to achieve a higher standard of living. In a growth economy this is positively desirable; it is in this sense that modern industrial society is materialistic. This is not to condemn the desire for a higher standard of living. Especially important in this respect is the plight of the poor. In this category are included the millions in the Third World who do not have enough to eat and those living in areas of deprivation even in the rich nations. But the terrible thing is our motives for a higher standard of living are basically selfish rather than being based on a clear appreciation of the source of physical well-being.' Many people just think how to pursuit wealth, luxury and sensual indulgence. For this kind of people, it is not important how to get all the things they want, sometimes they will do the evil thing to satisfy their lust. Human pursuit of economic growth has been a selfish one and this puts the whole process in jeopardy through environmental and other threats. The problem lies within man himself. It is a spiritual matter. |
