Toward Discerning with the Christian Community: The Role of Youth Pastor in the Social Operating System of Networked Individualism

Abstract

The contemporary social operating system of networked individualism has fundamentally reshaped community life, shifting it from densely knit groups to permeable networks of interpersonal ties. Situated within a broader anthropological and digital transformation, this environment creates a seamless experience where the distinction between online and offline spheres is increasingly irrelevant. While providing constant connectivity, this system often fosters an “I-alone” approach to faith, characterised by instrumental relationships and digital impression management. This study utilises a practical theology framework to propose a transformative pastoral model centred on a four-stage discernment process, integrated within a communal context of koinōnia to bridge the digital-physical divide and offer a portable “community to go.” Ultimately, the research positions the youth pastor as a “co-investigator” and “friend” who facilitates a communal transition from transactional networks to authentic fellowship. By fostering a “we-together” mindset, this approach equips young people to navigate their hyper-connected reality as faithful agents of Christ.
